Canadian curlers John Morris and Rachel Homan opened the mixed doubles event at the Beijing Olympics with a 6-4 loss to Great Britain.
The Canadian team held the hammer in the eighth end of the match — trailing only by one — but Britain’s Jen Dodds secured the win with a final shot that curled right onto the button.
Dodds and her partner Bruce Mouat are the reigning World Champions in the discipline. The Canadians are now 0-1 in the 10-team tournament while the Brits are 2-0.
Morris and partner Kaitlyn Lawes won the gold medal in this event at the 2018 Games — the first time it was contested at the Olympic level. He also won gold as part of Kevin Martin’s team in 2010 in Vancouver. Homan also competed at the 2018 Games but her rink failed to reach the playoff round in the women’s event.
The Canadians return to the ice with two games on Thursday. The first one — against Norway — will be played at 7:05 a.m. ET and the second will be against Switzerland at 7:35 p.m. ET.
