Canada’s Laurie Blouin and Jasmine Baird missed out on the medals in the women’s big air snowboard competition Tuesday at the Beijing Olympics.
Blouin, who qualified for the final in fourth place and was a favourite to win a medal, fell on two of her three attempts in the final and finished eighth. Baird, a 22-year-old in her first Games, finished in seventh.
Anna Gasser of Austria took the gold medal to defend her title from PyeongChang, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott of New Zealand — who won the bronze in 2018 — claimed the silver and Kokomo Murase of Japan won the bronze.
Big Air sees riders take three attempts down the hill with their two highest scores added together for a final total. After falling on her first attempt, Blouin rebounded to score an 86.25 in round two and entered the final jump with a chance to jump up into the medal discussion. But a fall on the third jump left her with a score of 115.0.
Baird finished with a score of 130.0 with her first jump (68.75) and third jump (61.25) making up her total.
