With a score of 86.18 points on Monday, Gilles and Poirier have a narrow lead of 0.71 over Great Britain's Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, who sit in fourth.
The medals will be decided on Wednesday when the competition continues with the free dance portion of the event.
Laurence Fournier Beaudry, a former Canadian figure skater, and Guillaume Cizeron of France sit in first with a score of 90.18.
Madison Chock and Evan Bates from the United States are in second after a score of 89.72.
Marjorie Lajoie of Boucherville, Que., and Zachary Lagha, of St-Hubert, Que., are in ninth (79.66), while Marie-Jade Lauriault of Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines, Que., and Romain Le Gac of Laval, Que., were 15th (74.35).
