Saturday marks the first full day of competition at the Beijing Olympics.
Here are five Canadian storylines to follow on the first day when medals will be awarded:

Canadian women’s hockey team
vs. Finland, 11:10 p.m. (Friday)
Canada beat Switzerland 12-1 in its opener, while Finland was outshot badly in a 5-2 loss to the Americans. If Finland wants to be seen as a threat to the heavy favourites from North America, it needs to take a step up in this game. Canada is 6-0 against Finland in Olympic play, outscoring the Finns 29-6.

Rachel Homan and John Morris
Mixed doubles curling: vs. Sweden, 1:05 a.m., vs. U.S., 7:05 a.m.
The Ottawa natives have won three in a row after losing their opener against Great Britain. Canada is tied for second with Great Britain, but the Swedes lurk right behind at 3-2.

Long-track speedskating women’s 3,000 metre final, 3:30 a.m.
This is Canada’s first big medal opportunity of the Olympics. Weidemann, from Ottawa, has two silver medals at this distance on the World Cup circuit this season.

Men’s moguls final, 6:30 a.m.
One of Canada’s top winter sport athletes looks for his second Olympic gold medal in a row. The native of Deux-Montagnes, Que., delivered a qualifying win on Thursday to secure his spot in the final. He’s looking to become the first Canadian freestyle skier to win a third Olympic medal.
Canadian short-track speedskating mixed relay team
Quarterfinal at 7:23 a.m. ET, semifinal at 7:53 a.m., final at 8:18 a.m.
Canada is ranked fifth in the world in this event. The Canadians won a silver medal in this discipline at a World Cup stop in Hungary in November.
