Canadian short-track speedskating star Charles Hamelin has earned a shot to try to tie the national record for most medals won by a Winter Olympian.

Hamelin, Steven Dubois, Pascal Dion and Maxime Laoun beat out Italy, Japan and China.

South Korea, the winner of the other semifinal, the Russians, Italy and Japan also booked spots in the final.

Hamelin, one of Canada's two flag-bearers at the Opening Ceremony, has won five career Olympic medals. Long-track speedskater Cindy Klassen holds the Canadian record with six.

Hamelin and Dubois were part of a Canadian team that won bronze at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

Earlier Friday, Dubois and fellow Canadians Jordan Pierre-Gilles advanced through the men's 500-metre heats.

Canadians Courtney Sarault and Alyson Charles were eliminated in the women's 1,000-metre quarterfinals.
