The Canadian women's basketball team can still qualify for the 2024 Paris Games on Sunday but fate is now out of their hands.
Canada lost 86-82 to Japan in their final game of the Olympic qualifying tournament in Sopron, Hungary.
Despite finishing the event with a 1-2 record, Canada can still book their tickets to Paris if Hungary loses later in the day against powerhouse Spain.
However, with Japan's win over Canada, Spain has already qualified for the Olympics and may not have a certain urgency against Hungary.
Only one team from this group of four countries will miss the Olympics. With Hungary having lost to Canada in the opening bout, the host team won't possess the tiebreaker necessary to advance should they both lose.
The Group of Death has lived up to its billing as all of the four teams possessed 1-1 records going into the final matchday.
Here's a full explainer.
