After a world record score in the short program, the American confirmed his victory in the free skate with a combined score of 332.60. Following the disappointment of missing the podium in the 2018 Winter Games, Chen finally grabbed his first singles Olympic medal.
Two-time Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu fell just short of the podium, ranking fourth with a combined score of 283.21. Hanyu attempted a quad axel, an Olympic first, but couldn’t land the historic jump.
Yuga Kagiyama solidified his second place at the free skate and the 18-year-old took silver for Japan with a score of 310.05. Kagiyama’s fellow countryman Shoma Uno rounded out the podium and took bronze with a score of 293.00.
Canadian Keegan Messing placed 11th with a score of 265.61.
