Another strong performance from Olympic rookie Madeline Schizas led Canada to a fourth-place finish in the team figure skating event at the Beijing Games on Monday.
Schizas, an 18-year-old from Oakville, Ont., was third in the women’s free skate — the final event of the team competition.
Schizas also was third in the short program, lifting Canada to fourth from sixth and getting the country into the five-team final.
“I think I do get very nervous, there’s no denying that,” Schizas told CBC. “But I think I’m really good at just making it like a job and keeping my emotions on check to put on a performance. Obviously, it’s something you can work on, but I think for me it’s come naturally. Really, moreso than any of my technical elements, it’s one of my strengths.
Russia won gold, the United States took silver and Japan grabbed bronze. Canada was the defending Olympic champion in the team event.
It was the third fourth-place finish for Canada at the Beijing Games.
Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier were third in the free dance, while Vanessa James and Eric Radford were fourth in the pairs free skate.
Individual figure skating starts with the men’s short program on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET.
