ATHLETICS
Women’s 400 — Carline Muir, Toronto, posted a time of 51.55 to finish 17th in qualifying and advance to the second round.
Women’s heptathlon — Jessica Zelinka of London, Ont., finished sixth overall with 6,490 points, and had personal-best performances in four of the seven events which comprise the competition.
Women’s pole vault — Kelsie Hendry, Saskatoon, failed to qualify for the final after placing 18th in qualifying with a mark of 4.30 metres.
BASEBALL
Chris Robinson, Dorchester, Ont., had three hits in a 5-4 loss to the U.S. Canada (1-3) needs to win all three of their preliminary-round games to have any chance of playing for a medal.
CYCLING
Men’s points race — Zachary Bell of Watson Lake, Yukon, placed seventh in the final with a score of 27.
DIVING
Women’s three-metre springboard — Blythe Hartley of Vancouver placed 10th and qualified for the finals with a combined score of 324.60. Jennifer Abel, Laval, Que., placed 13th (296.10), and is a reserve diver for the finals.
EQUESTRIAN
Dressage — Ashley Holzer, Toronto, and her mount Pop Art, placed 15th overall in the individual Grand Prix special with 68.760 points.
GYMNASTICS
Men’s trampoline — Jason Burnett, Toronto, placed seventh to qualify for the next round with a score of 69.70.
Women’s trampoline — Rosannagh Maclennan, King City, Ont., placed third in qualifying with a score of 66.00; Karen Cockburn, Toronto, placed fourth (65.60). Both advanced to the next round.
ROWING
Men’s double sculls — Dave Calder, Victoria, and Scott Frandsen, Kelowna, B.C., win silver medal — the first Canadian medal in Beijing.
Men’s lightweight double sculls — John Sasi, North Delta, B.C., and Cameron Sylvester of Caledon, Ont., placed sixth in the b-final (6:40.80).
Women’s quad sculls (without cox) — Canada (Rachelle de Jong, Regina; Anna-Marie de Zwager, Victoria; Janine Hanson, Winnipeg; Krista Guloien, Vancouver), placed second in the b-final 6:28.78.
SAILING
Women’s Laser Radial (one-person dinghy) Lisa Ross of Lunenburg, N.S., placed seventh in the day’s event and is currently 12th overall after five races.
Men’s 470 (two-person dinghy) — Stephane Locas, St-Eustache, Que., and Oliver Bone, Montreal, rank 29th overall (205 points) after 10 races.
Men’s Laser (one-person dinghy) — Mike Leigh, Vancouver, finished fourth and fifth in the day’s races and stands 12th overall (45) after five rounds.
Men’s 49er-Skiff — Gordon Cook, Toronto, and Ben Remocker, Vancouver, are 14th overall (134 points) through 12 races.
Men’s Tornado-Multihull — Oskar Johansson, Oakville, Ont., and Kevin Stittle, of Orangeville, Ont., stand sixth overall through three races.
SOFTBALL
Danielle Lawrie allowed two runs on four hits as Canada (3-2) lost a preliminary-round match 2-0 to Venezuela.
WATER POLO
Aaron Feltham of Lindsay, Ont., and Kevin Graham, Regina, each scored three goals as Canada (0-4) lost 13-7 to Greece.
WRESTLING
Women’s 48 kg — Carol Huynh, Hazelton, B.C., won the gold medal by defeating Chiharo Ichu of Japan (4-0, 2-1).
Women’s 55 kg — Tonya Verbeek, Beamsville, Ont., def. Ida-Theres Nerell, Sweden (1-0, 1-0) to win a bronze medal.
