Evan Dunfee’s appeal overturned, Japan wins race walk bronze

Evan Dunfee briefly held the bronze medal for Canada after winning an appeal in 50km race walk on Friday, before the Japanese won their own appeal to drop him back down to fourth in the race.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Canadian race walker Evan Dunfee is losing his bronze medal in the 50-kilometre event at the Rio Olympics.

Japan’s Hirooki Arai originally finished third but was disqualified for elbowing Dunfee in the final minutes of the race.

Hirooki then filed his own protest and won to regain the medal.

An Athletics Canada official confirmed Dunfee was bumped back to fourth.
