Canadian curlers Rachel Homan and John Morris improved to 1-1 in the mixed doubles event at the Beijing Olympics with a 7-6 win over Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten of Norway on Thursday.
Canada scored one in the eighth and final end and didn’t have to throw last rock after Norway was short on a draw.
It was a key win for the Canadians after a 6-4 loss to Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat of Great Britain – the reigning world champs – earlier in the day.
Against Norway (1-2), Homan and Morris scored four in the second to erase a 2-0 deficit.
Skaslien and Nedregotten won bronze in the event’s Olympic debut in 2018 in PyeongChang.
Morris teamed with Kaitlyn Lawes to capture Olympic gold four years ago.
Homan and Morris were named Canada’s mixed doubles reps this year after the Olympic trials were cancelled because of COVID-19.
Canada faces another tough game in the first draw on Friday in Beijing (Thursday at 7:35 p.m. ET / 4:35 PT) against reigning Olympic silver medallists Jenny Perret and Martin Rios of Switzerland (1-2).
Canada then takes on China on Friday at 12:35 a.m. ET / 9 p.m. PT.
The top four teams after the 10-team round robin advance to the semifinals.
Italy’s Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner are the lone undefeaeted team at 2-0.
Sweden, the Czech Republic, Great Britain and China are tied for second at 2-1.
