MONTEMOR-O-VELHO, Portugal — Canada’s Mark de Jonge finished second in the men’s K1 200 metres on Sunday at the final ICF Canoe Sprint World Cup.
It was the first K1 200 medal on the three-stop World Cup tour for the Halifax native. France’s Maxime Beaumont won the race while Alex Scott, of Bedford, N.S., was ninth.
De Jonge is a two-time world champion and Olympic bronze medallist from the London 2012 Games.
Montreal’s Emilie Fournel was fourth in the women’s K1 500 after leading the race until the final 200 metres. New Zealand’s Lisa Carrington was first and Michelle Russell, of Fall River, N.S., was sixth.
Roland Varga and Paul Bryant, of Richmond Hill, Ont., were fifth in the men’s C2 1,000. Ottawa’s Ben Tardioli finished sixth in the men’s C1 200.
Mark Oldershaw, of Burlington, Ont., won gold in the men’s C1 500, a non-Olympic event. Oldershaw has already qualified for his third Summer Games and previously took bronze at the 2012 Olympics.
Adam van Koeverden, of Oakville, Ont., took silver in the men’s K1 500 and is representing Canada in the 1,000 event in Rio de Janeiro.
Paul Bryant of Richmond Hill was second in the men’s C1 5,000 while the crew of de Jonge, Scott, Ryan Cochrane, of Windsor, N.S., and Etienne Morneau, of Quebec City, captured silver in the men’s K4 200.
