Canada’s Oleksiak wins silver in 100-metre butterfly

Penny Oleksiak gave Canada its second medal at the games, this one silver, as she finished second behind gold medalist Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, who also set a new world record in the 100m butterfly at the Rio Games.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Canada’s Penny Oleksiak has her second medal of the Rio Olympics after taking silver in the women’s 100-metre butterfly.

The 16-year-old from Toronto finished with a Canadian and world junior record time of 56.46 seconds to earn her second medal in as many nights.

Oleksiak also helped Canada win bronze in the 4×100-metre relay yesterday, swimming the anchor leg.

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom won gold in a world-record time of 55.48 seconds, and American Dana Vollmer finished third in 56.63 seconds.

Oleksiak was third at the turn, but closed strong over the final 50 metres.
