The Gold Standard: Day 1 from Rio 2016

As medals are being won and records are broken there is much to pay attention to in Rio de Janeiro. Here are some fun and quirky podium-level performances in and around the Olympics that caught my eye on Day 1.

Gold for karaoke

The gold medal for great karaoke singing goes to the U.S. swim team. Not only dominant in the water they also reign supreme with their vocal cords.

Gold for self improvement

Great Britain swimmer Adam Peaty, who’s just 21-years-old, broke his own world record in the 100-metre breaststroke. Amazingly, it wasn’t even in the final, it was in the heats(!). His time of 57.55 seconds was 0.37 faster than his original record. Peaty will have a chance to break the mark again in the breaststroke final on Monday.

Gold medal for looking unimpressed

With Korey Jarvis looking the part of an intimidating Olympic wrestler, Jasmine Mian and other female wrestlers showed their excitement on Day 1 in Rio.

Gold medal Looking like Leo

Brady Ellison made headlines not just for winning silver in archery for the U.S. but for winning gold in the Leonardo DiCaprio look-alike sweepstakes. If DiCaprio wants to be involved in a future Hunger Games movie he already has a stunt double.

Gold medal decision-maker

DeMar DeRozan and Jimmy Butler played a friendly game of “rock, paper, scissors” to decide who took free throws on behalf of Team USA. No better way to determine life’s tough questions.

Gold medal for close call

A bullet pierced a hole through the tent at the Olympic Equestrian Centre. Luckily nobody was harmed.

Gold medal for patience

The lines for media and spectators have been long in Rio. Fans are spending more time getting through security than they are inside the venues.

Gold for Twitter impersonation

Namibian cyclist Dan Craven created quite the stir during his race on Saturday when his Twitter account posted several tweets — during his race. The “live tweeting” led to some funny exchanges:

The jig was up eventually, as CNET reported that his girlfriend was the one with the Twitter fingers.
