TORONTO — Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst of Germany captured the Swatch beach volleyball FIVB World Tour final on Sunday with a straight sets victory over Swiss duo Joana Heidrich and Nadine Zumkehr.

Ludwig and Walkenhorst captured the match 21-18, 21-16 in 41 minutes. They were coming off a gold medal at the Rio Olympics last month while also winning European and German titles this season.

The Germans were able to overcome a slow start to the event after losing their first two games in pool play.

"We are really speechless," Ludwig said. "This season was amazing for us. As a team we really improved a lot. We put everything in that last game and it turned out great."

It was the final match for Zumkehr, 31, who will now retire.

In the men’s final, Olympic champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt got past Evandro Goncalves and Pedro Solberg 21-19, 21-19 in an all-Brazilian championship. It’s the second consecutive World Tour Finals championship for Cerutti and Schmidt.

They finished their season with four gold medals, two silvers, and five trips to the podium in the nine events.
