Michael Phelps will have yet another chance to add to his prodigious Olympic medal collection after qualifying for the men’s 200-metre butterfly final Monday night.
Phelps qualified with a semifinal time of 1:54.12. Tamas Kenderesi, a 19-year-old from Hungary, was the only swimmer with a faster qualifying time. The final is scheduled to take place Tuesday night.
The 200-metre butterfly has been one of Phelps’ best events throughout his career. He won Olympic gold medals in Athens in 2004, Beijing in 2008 and took home silver at London 2012 after being edged out by South Africa’s Chad Le Clos, who also qualified for Tuesday’s final.
