Could Canadians go back-to-back at the WM Phoenix Open?
It's early, but Corey Conners has at least given himself a shot.
Conners shot a 4-under 67 in the opening round of the notoriously wild PGA Tour event on Thursday, putting him three shots back of leader Wyndham Clark of the U.S.
Fellow Canadian Nick Taylor won the event last year, beating Charley Hoffman in a playoff on Super Bowl Sunday. Taylor shot a 1-under 70 on Thursday.
Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., was 3 under, Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., was 2 under, Mackenzie Hughes of Hamilton was 1 under and Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont., was 2 over.
Conners, from Listowel, Ont., birdied the final two holes to put him near the leaders.
Conners tied for fifth at the season-opening Sentry last month. He has two career PGA Tour wins — both at the Valero Texas Open in 2023 and '19.
