Mike Weir fell out of contention at the Pure Insurance Championship with a trying round on Sunday.
The Brights Grove, Ont., native entered the day tied atop the leaderboard at the PGA Tour Champions event at 10-under, but struggled to find any consistency on his final 18 holes of the tournament.
Weir shot a 3-over 72 to fall back in the running, finishing his round tied for ninth in the standings at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.
He faded on the back nine, bogeying the 10th, 12th and 16th holes without any birdies after playing even through the front nine.
It is Weir's best career finish on the 50-and-over circuit this year, beating out his 11th-place result at the Insperity Invitational in May — the same tournament that he won in 2021 for his only title on the PGA Tour Champions Tour.
Weir, 55, is an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour, highlighted by his Masters triumph in 2003. He is the only Canadian man ever to win a major.
American Doug Barron shot a 6-under on Sunday to surge to the victory, narrowly beating out Vijay Singh with clutch birdies on Holes 17 and 18. It was Barron's fourth senior victory.
He trailed Weir and Steven Alker by four shots entering the day, and Alker still had a chance to match him with a birdie on the seaside par-5 18th but made bogey for a 72 to finish two shots back with Retief Goosen (65). Singh was second after he parred the final three holes for a 69.
Fred Couples tied for fifth at 8 under, the 65-year-old's best finish since February.
