Episode 27: Stories From Outside The Octagon

Episode 31: The Life And Times Of Frank Robinson
March 07 2019

The world lost a role model when Frank Robinson died February 7. A 14-time All-Star. A Triple Crown winner. A Hall of Famer. Two World Series rings. The only player to win MVP in both the American National Leagues. The first African-American manager in MLB. And so much more. Robinson’s resume is one of the best sports has ever seen. But he represented more than just his baseball achievements.

Jeff and Stephen discuss Robinson’s life on and off the field, recalling what it was like to cover him as a manager and how he was a pivotal personality in America during an era of social upheaval. They are also joined by film producer and former sports columnist David Israel, who offers his own stories of Robinson off the field.

Episode 30: Bill Belichick, Human Being
February 20 2019

He's the last true head coach in sports - every player on a Bill Belichick team buys into his system because it's one that wins. But Belichick is also famously robotic, when it comes to his football persona and how little we know about him away from the field of play.

Michael Lombardi spent three decades in the NFL as a team executive. He now writes for The Ringer and The Athletic, and is the author of Gridiron Genius: A Master Class in Winning Championships and Building Dynasties in the NFL. Lombardi joined Jeff and Stephen to discuss his time with the New England Patriots under Belichick. He shines a light on the man who cuts the sleeves off his hoodies, famously offers the shortest answers possible to reporters' questions and is arguably the greatest coach in football history.

Episode 29: When Hockey Hurts
February 05 2019

It’s Canada’s Game, but in recent months and years some of its traditions have been challenged by players and in the court of public opinion. Daniel Carcillo has been at the forefront of two of those discussions: concussions and hazing.

Carcillo joins Jeff and Stephen to discuss his life on and off the ice, including the $18.9-million concussion settlement the NHL and 318 former players have tentatively reached and his experiences of abuse while a rookie with the OHL’s Sarnia Sting.

This episode was produced by Ryan Walsh and sound engineered by Amil Delic, and hosted by Stephen Brunt and Jeff Blair.
