LONDON (AP) — Mohamed Salah made a scoring return for Liverpool as the Premier League leader routed Brentford 4-1 on Saturday.
Salah had been out for a month since sustaining a hamstring injury at the Africa Cup of Nations. He came on as a substitute just before halftime at the Gtech Community Stadium and struck his 19th goal of the season in all competitions in the 68th minute.
Liverpool already led 2-0 at that point, after Darwin Nunez opened the scoring in the 35th and Alexis Mac Allister added another from Salah's assist.
Ivan Toney pulled a goal back for Brentford in the 75th, scoring for the fourth time in five games since returning from an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.
But substitute Cody Gakpo sealed a 4-1 win for Liverpool in the 86th, which provisionally extended its lead at the top of the table to five points.
Second-place Manchester City and Arsenal, in third, were due to play later on Saturday.
Defending champion City was playing Chelsea and last season's runner-up Arsenal was at Burnley.
While Liverpool's title challenge remains in good shape, there was concern for manager Jurgen Klopp after injuries to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota in the first half. Jota had to leave the field on a stretcher.
The Merseyside club was already without the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara and Dominik Szoboszlai, while goalkeeper Alisson was also hurt in training on Friday and missed the game against Brentford.
Arsenal 5, Burnley 0
In Burnley, Bukayo Saka scored twice as Arsenal kept the pressure on English Premier League leader Liverpool by routing the hosts 5-0 on Saturday.
Last week, Arsenal blew away West Ham 6-0. The Gunners have won their last six games in the league and scored five or more goals in three of them.
Saka scored on either side of halftime and Arsenal remained within two points of Liverpool.
Martin Odegaard put Arsenal ahead in the fourth minute and Saka doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the 41st.
Saka scored again two minutes after halftime and goals from Leandro Trossard in the 66th and Kai Havertz in the 78th completed the rout.
Second-from-bottom Burnley was above only Sheffield United on goal difference, having played a game more.
Sheffield United could move off the foot of the table on Sunday if it avoids defeat against Brighton.
Burnley has won one of its last 12 games in all competitions.
Bournemouth 2, Newcastle 2
In Newcastle, substitute Matt Ritchie came to the home team's rescue as they fought back twice to draw with Bournemouth 2-2 in an incident-packed game at St James' Park.
Ritchie had been on the pitch for only seconds when he scored in stoppage time, cancelling out Antoine Semenyo's stunning strike just as it looked like the visitors would emerge with all three points.
Dominic Solanke's 16th goal — and third against Newcastle — of the season gave Bournemouth the lead, but Anthony Gordon levelled with a disputed penalty in front of a crowd of 52,224 which included sporting director Dan Ashworth, whose pursuit by Manchester United thrust him into the headlines this week.
For the Gordon goal, referee Michael Salisbury was advised to review Adam Smith's challenge on Fabian Schar inside the area, and after a lengthy spell at the pitchside monitor he pointed to the spot, much to Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola’s disbelief.
In the absence of the injured Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, Gordon took charge and dispatched his spot kick firmly past Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto.
Wolves 2, Tottenham 1
In London, two goals from Joao Gomes secured Wolves a surprise 2-1 win at Tottenham.
Defeat at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium saw Spurs drop to fifth on the table in a blow to their hopes of Champions League qualification.
Aston Villa moved above Spurs after winning at Fulham. Tottenham was two points behind Villa as the race for the top four tightens.
Gomes scored in each half as Wolves completed a league double over Ange Postecoglou's team. The Midlands club won by the same scoreline at Molineux in November.
Gomes headed Wolves ahead in the 42nd minute and Dejan Kulusevski levelled for Tottenham in the 46th.
Wolves' winner came after a wonderful solo run from Pedro Neto, who raced half the length of the field before setting up Gomes to side-foot home in the 63rd.
Nottingham Forest 2, West Ham 0
In Nottingham, Forest's hopes of English Premier League survival were boosted by defeating West Ham 2-0 on Saturday.
Taiwo Awoniyi and Callum Hudson-Odoi struck in stoppage time at the end of each half at the City Ground.
West Ham was reduced to 10 men after on-loan midfielder Kalvin Phillips was sent off.
The victory moved Forest five points above the relegation zone and ended a four-game winless run in the league.
Forest took the lead in the fifth minute of first-half added time through Awoniyi. With his back to goal in the penalty area, he received the ball from Nicolas Dominguez, spun around Nayef Aguerd and slotted past West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
West Ham’s hopes of a comeback were hit in the 71st when Phillips was shown a second yellow card in the space of minutes and sent off.
Hudson-Odoi sealed Forest's win in the fourth minute of stoppage when powering home from close range.
