The Toronto Sceptres are adding some star power to their blueline.
During the first round of Tuesday's PWHL Draft, Toronto announced that it has acquired defender Ella Shelton from the New York Sirens in exchange for the third and 27th overall picks.
Shelton totalled 16 points in 2024-25 for New York and led all defenders in goals scored with eight, while playing 24:32 per game.
A native of Ingersoll, Ont., Shelton was named to the PWHL's First All-Star Team in 2024 and boasts an impressive international career.
The 27-year-old won gold medals with Team Canada at the 2021, 2022 and 2024 Women’s World Championships, as well as at the 2022 Olympic Games.
She was selected fourth overall by New York in the 2023 PWHL Draft and was named one of the first alternate captains in franchise history, alongside Alex Capenter. She went on to score the first goal in PWHL history in a win over Toronto in January 2024.
Shelton played collegiately at Clarkson University, where she won two national championships.
After the deal was completed on Tuesday night, New York went on to use the third pick on Casey O'Brien, a forward from the University of Wisconsin and the 27th pick on Maddi Wheeler, a forward from Ohio State.
