“Use your HEAD…..to stop the SPREAD!”
Formula One World Driving Championship:
Last Race: December 6th: Shakir Grand Prix, Bahrain: Racing Point drivers 1st and 3rd!
First career F-1 win for Mexico’s Sergio Perez who took over with 25 laps to go when race dominator George Russell had to pit with a flat tire. Merc botched the tire changes on both cars just ahead of that, ruining almost a sure win for Russell. Perez was spun out on the first lap, but he fought back brilliantly, the first Mexican driver to win a GP since Pedro Rodriguez in 1970. Ironically, Perez will be replaced at Racing Point by Sebastian Vettel next season! Estaban Ocon 2nd for Renault, with Perez’s team mate, Montreal’s Lance Stroll, on the podium, 3rd, matching his podium at Monza.
Williams’ George Russell was subbing for Lewis Hamilton, isolating after a positive Covid-19 test. Not sure if Lewis is back for the Abu Dhabi closer. George finished 10th in Bahrain, his first points. He avoided a penalty for using Bottas’ tires, the mix up caused by radio failure. The team fined 20 thousand pounds.
Still buzzing about that awful crash and fire Romain Grosjean survived last week in Bahrain. Grosjean will not do the season-closer in Abu Dhabi. Mercedes will give him a final run in an F-1 car, he won’t be back with Haas. He may do IndyCars. Haas reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi, grandson of Emerson Fittipaldi subbed for Grosjean and finished Bahrain 17th. Toronto’s Nick Latifi, did not finish Shakir.
Driver Points with 1 GP to go: Under Hamilton’s 7th career Championship: Verstappen is just 16 points back of Bottas for 2nd. Lance Stroll leads Pierre Gasly by 3 points for 10th. The Shakir podiums pull Racing Point up to 3rd in the Constructor’s fight under Mercedes 7th title.
