MILAN, Italy — AC Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini has signed a one-year extension to his contract, tying him to the Serie A club until June 2013.

Ambrosini has spent almost his entire career at Milan since signing from Cesena in 1995, apart from a season-long loan at Vicenza.

The midfielder took on the captain’s armband after Paolo Maldini retired in 2009.

Ambrosini has helped Milan to a number of trophies, including four Serie A titles and two Champions League victories.

The former Italy international was not part of the Azzurri squad which won the World Cup in 2006.

Milan fans will welcome the news with Gennaro Gattuso, Alessandro Nesta, Filippo Inzaghi, Mark van Bommel, Clarence Seedorf and Gianluca Zambrotta all leaving the club this summer.
