MILAN, Italy — Massimiliano Allegri was appointed as AC Milan’s new coach on Friday.

The Serie A team said on its website that Allegri signed a contract to June 2012.

Allegri, a former Cagliari coach, replaces Leonardo, who was fired in May after one season in charge.

AC Milan was knocked out by Manchester United in the second round of the Champions League. It finished third in the Serie A, securing a place in next year’s Champions League.

For much of the season, AC Milan was Inter Milan’s main challenger for the Serie A title, but twice wasted chances to move to the top in March and subsequently slipped behind AS Roma into third.

Allegri was axed by Cagliari in April after he became distracted with speculation over his future. The 42-year-old had been Milan’s target to succeed Leonardo.
