Adebayor signs new deal at Arsenal

LONDON — Emmanuel Adebayor signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal on Monday to formally end rumours that he was set to leave the club.

The 24-year-old Adebayor had been linked with clubs including AC Milan during the off-season and seemed likely to leave Arsenal, but apparently had a change of heart and decided to stay in north London.

Arsenal did not specify the length of the Togo striker’s contract, saying only that it was a "long-term" deal.

Adebayor scored 30 goals last season, third only to Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool’s Fernando Torres. But Arsenal fans were seemingly unimpressed by his dalliance with other clubs, jeering him in Saturday’s season-opening win over West Brom.

The new contract should mean that Arsenal will at least be able to demand a large fee for Adebayor should he decide to leave any time soon.
