Canada Soccer has appointed Order of Canada member and Olympic silver medallist Charmaine Crooks the acting vice-president of its board of directors. She is the first woman and first person of colour to serve in the post.
The position was vacated by Dr. Nick Bontis when he was elected as Canada Soccer president in November. An election will be held at its 2021 annual meeting of members to determine the final remaining year of the vice-president post, after which an election will be held for a four-year term starting in 2022.
“Charmaine Crooks is a tremendous appointment to serve as vice-president of Canada Soccer and I’m proud of the organization for selecting its first female and person of colour as vice president,” said Bontis said in a press release.
“As a decorated elite athlete, Olympian, and sought-after board executive, Charmaine brings a unique blend of skills and experience that will be vital to our work to build back from the challenges of COVID-19 and capitalize on the opportunity in the lead up to FIFA World Cup 2026."
Crooks was named to the Order of Canada in 2012 and is a five-time Olympian, capturing a silver medal as a member of the 1984 women's 4X400-metre relay team in Los Angeles.
She previously served as director with the Canadian Olympic Committee, president of Olympians Canada and held multiple roles with the International Olympic Committee.
