Canada's 1-0 defeat at the hands of the United States in a friendly was far from their largest loss on Tuesday.
Team captain Stephen Eustáquio is feared to have sustained a serious injury, according to national team head coach Jesse Marsch.
"He felt a crack in his shoulder, so we're hopeful that it's not bad, but it's possible that it — he's at the hospital getting an X-ray — so it's possible that it's a broken clavicle or something like that," Marsch said after the game.
The 29-year-old midfielder had a hard fall on the turf at Allianz Field after a challenge by Gio Reyna just before the half. He appeared to be shaken up but stayed in the game temporarily.
Eustáquio was subbed out at halftime, and Canada soccer announced that he was unable to continue.
Marsch replaced Eustáquio with Mathieu Choinière.
Eustáquio has been serving as captain in the absence of Alphonso Davies, who has missed significant time this year with a hamstring injury.
