There’s a new most expensive British player.
Five years after Manchester City paid a then-record sum for former Aston Villa talisman Jack Grealish, it has exceeded its own record. On Thursday, City reached an agreement with Nottingham Forest to sign midfielder Elliot Anderson for £116 million ($217 million CDN), according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
The 23-year-old Anderson, who is in the U.S. on international duty with England for the World Cup, is set to undergo a physical on Friday ahead of making his move to the Etihad Stadium official.
The all-action midfielder is Man City’s first arrival in what is expected to be a transformational summer for the club. Not only has Pep Guardiola departed after a decade, but so too have long-time stalwarts Bernardo Silva and John Stones.
Across two seasons with Nottingham Forest, Anderson made 92 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals and adding 11 assists while becoming a regular international starter for England.
He signed with Forest from Newcastle United, who he first joined as an eight-year old, having been implored to make the move as his childhood club faced the threat of a points deduction due to financial regulations.
