Spain’s Alexia Putellas is the winner of the 2021 women’s Ballon d’Or, awarded to the year’s best female player in the world.
Putellas outvoted Jenni Hermoso and Sam Kerr, who came in second and third, respectively.
In 52 games for Barcelona during the calendar year, Putellas recorded 38 goals and 24 assists. She helped Los Cules win both the Spanish title and the Champions League last season.
Three Canadian players were among the nominees for the first time. Christine Sinclair of the Portland Thorns, Paris Saint-Germain’s Ashley Lawrence and Jessie Fleming of Chelsea were all up for the Ballon d’Or after helping Canada win a gold medal at the Tokyo Games this past summer.
Sinclair finished sixth in voting, while Lawrence and Fleming were eighth and ninth, respectively.
