The United States men’s soccer team’s top keeper, Zack Steffen, did not travel with the team to Columbus ahead of Thursday’s World Cup qualifying match against El Salvador and is considered day-to-day, the team announced Tuesday.
The 26-year-old is experiencing back tightness. Steffen missed the USMNT’s first five qualifiers due to a back injury and a bout with COVID-19.
Steffen, who serves as Manchester City’s backup, started for the team in its last three World Cup qualifying matches helping the Americans to a 2-0-1 window.
Matt Turner, who backstopped the Americans in their first five matches, is likely to get the start Thursday if Steffen is unavailable.
The U.S. is in Hamilton to face Canada on Sunday.
After eight matches, the U.S is second in the CONCACAF group, one point behind Canada.
The top three teams earn direct entry into the World Cup.
