BOLOGNA, Italy — Bologna won promotion back to Serie A, a year after its relegation, following a 1-1 draw with Pescara in the second leg of their playoff final Tuesday.

With the first leg having ended 0-0, Bologna only needed another draw as, in the event of a tie, the team which finishes higher in the regular season gains promotion.

Bologna finished fourth, seven points ahead of seventh-placed Pescara.

Pescara substitute Cristian Pasquato levelled 10 minutes into the second half to cancel out Gianluca Sansone’s 37th-minute opener.

Bologna had to play the final 25 minutes with 10 men after Ibrahima Mbaye was sent off.

Bologna, which was bought by New York lawyer Joe Tacopina and Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo in October, joins Serie B champion Carpi and runner-up Frosinone in the topflight.
