Earlier this year we looked through every game Toronto FC ever played and put together some charts showing the team’s progress versus past TFC sides. At the time, they were in the midst of their third-best showing to that point in the season, and the question was: Could they keep it up?
The answer is yes and no. They didn’t maintain the torrid pace they were on through 12 games (6-4-2 for a winning percentage of .583), but they also didn’t capitulate down the stretch as past TFC teams had.
So how does their current standing—14-13-4 for a winning percentage of .516—compare to past teams after 31 games?
Not surprisingly, it’s the team’s best-ever showing. No TFC squad had ever won more games than the 11 the “Bloody Big Deal” Reds won in 2014. That team boasted the previous best effort through 31 games with a winning percentage of .468.
Here’s a visualization of every TFC season by game throughout their history (note: the league moved from a 30-game season to a 34-game season in 2011):
And for ease of viewing, here’s just the 2015 season against the team’s best-ever standing by game:
TFC has already locked up their best-ever season, and with one more point over the next three games they’ll secure their first post-season berth as well. What’s more and worth noting, if they win Wednesday night at home over the New York Red Bulls, they’ll also claim their first-ever four-game win streak.
