Canada’s Hastings hangs up his cleats

OTTAWA — Canadian international Richard Hastings is retiring from soccer and plans to work as an instructor at a soccer school.

The defender/midfielder who scored a famed Golden Goal in the quarter-finals of the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup made 59 appearances for the senior national team.

He retires tied for ninth in all-time appearances.

The 33-year-old from Vancouver spent most of his career playing for Scottish Premier League side Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

He also played for Ross County in Scotland, Grazer AK in Austria, and MVV Maastricht in Netherlands. Last year, he played for Hamilton Academical in Scotland.

"I would like to thank the Canadian Soccer Association and particularly the coaches that I have played under for giving me the opportunity to represent Canada," Hastings said in a release. "I have many highlights, memories and friendships to be thankful for throughout my international career.

"Now that I am retired, I will be focusing my efforts on raising the profile of the game in this country through my business The Other Foot Soccer School Canada."
