Canadian women’s national soccer team striker Adriana Leon has agreed to a two-year deal with Manchester United, the club announced Monday.
The Olympic gold medalist will be the first Canadian woman to play for the Red Devils. Leon joins on a free transfer after her contract with fellow FA Women’s Super League club West Ham expired at the end of last season.
“I couldn’t be more thrilled and honoured to join this historic football club,” Leon said in a statement. “To be the first Canadian female player to play for Manchester United fills me with immense pride and excitement”
“I can’t wait to join this talented group and put on the famous red jersey.”
The Mississauga native had been at West ham since the 2019 WSL season where she bagged nine goals in 43 appearances. A Canadian international since 2012, Leon 23 goals in 78 caps.
“I was extremely impressed with Adriana’s character, as she expressed confidence and fearlessness when we discussed her coming to Manchester United,” said manager Mark Skinner in a statement.
“Her flexibility to play in multiple positions effectively, while attacking and defending one-on-one duels with ferocity, will add excellent variety to our continuously developing team.”
