NEW YORK – Toronto FC midfielder Maurice Edu is the 2007 MLS rookie of the year.
The 21-year-old native of Fontana, Calif., had four goals and one assist in 25 games this season. The first overall pick of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft, Edu was third on the team with 2,180 minutes played.
The six-foot 170-pounder was one of the few bright spots on the pitch in Toronto’s first season, as the team finished last in the league (6-17-7).
Edu was up against Adam Christman of the New England Revolution and Dane Richards of the New York Red Bulls.
The award finalists were determined in a poll of MLS players, general managers, coaches, referees and members of the media.
Major League Soccer also announced that Chivas USA’s first-year coach, Preki, was voted MLS Coach of the Year.
