Second place Schalke sign Brazilian striker Edu

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany — Schalke has signed Brazilian striker Edu on a multi-year contract.
Schalke said Saturday that the 28-year-old Edu has joined his new teammates at a training camp in Chiclana, Spain.
Edu joined Schalke from South Korea’s Suwon Blue Wings. He previously played in the Bundesliga for Bochum and Mainz.
Schalke said it decided not to exercise an option that expired Dec. 31 to buy Slovakia defender Lubos Hanzel, who arrived in the off-season on loan from Spartak Trnava.
Schalke coach Felix Magath’s team went into the Bundesliga’s winter break in second place behind Bayer Leverkusen.
