Let’s not kid ourselves, even if Carlos Tevez did have a Genie who offered him three wishes, it’s unlikely that this fallen hero of Manchester City, could find happiness!
This is a player who was the darling of Manchester United’s famous Stretford End. Tevez declined a contract to stay at England’s must successful team. He promised United fans that he wouldn’t sign for arch rivals Liverpool.
Instead, he signed with sworn enemies Manchester City.
The reason now seems obvious, Tevez reportedly earns a weekly salary of $400,000. Surely the young Argentine would be more than satisfied with his lot?
Think again.
Within 18 months, despite enjoying the City captaincy and a new improved contract, Tevez asked to leave the club citing family reasons and a breakdown in “relationships with certain executives and individuals at the club”.
City perhaps made the mistake of persuading him to stay. It really never works, with the possible exception of Wayne Rooney’s little rant last year, most players should be moved along if they want to go.
Tevez needed to knuckle down and hope to get an offer that matched his ambition, but he didn’t. He returned late for preseason, and has appeared disinterested in a couple of substitute appearances.
Most recently, he failed to follow the instructions of club manager, Roberto Mancini in Munich, when he was asked to warm-up to come on in a Champions League match that City were losing 2-0.
The whole issue has now been dealt with through disciplinary channels, but Tevez was not content with getting away with a two week fine for his childish refusal, instead his agent has issued a threat that Tevez will sue Mancini for defamation of character!
I think anybody in soccer, regardless of loyalties, will know that what Tevez has engaged in is unacceptable and childish. How exactly he will achieve his stated goal to return to his native Argentina is beyond me. His fee and salary expectations are beyond the means of any Argentinian clubs, and anyway who would want to sign him now? Why couldn’t he have made even one smart move in the past three years? He is advised by the controversial Kia Joorabchian, but in the end what he says and does, he owns.
So I’ll take the three wishes. Carlos, change your attitude, change your agent, and realize you have a life that the fans on the terraces would give their first child for, and just play!
