MUNICH, Germany — Former Bayern Munich defender Breno has returned to the club while on day-release from his prison sentence for aggravated arson.

"The time in prison has been very hard for me," Breno said at a press conference Monday, when he appeared alongside Bayern President Uli Hoeness.

The 23-year-old Brazilian will help coach Bayern’s reserve side and youth teams, initially during his five hours of release every morning from the Stadelheim correctional facility, then increasing to eight hours if all goes to plan.

"It means I can train again and maybe play again later on — that’s my dream," Breno said.

Breno has served 13 months of the three-year, nine-month prison sentence he received in July 2012 for setting his rented villa on fire the September before.

Once he completes the sentence he will be deported from Germany. Former side Sao Paulo has expressed an interest in re-signing him.

Hoeness, who is facing his own charges of tax evasion, said Bayern "will do everything it can to help."
