France sweating Vieira fitness for Italy

CHATEL-SAINT-DENIS, Switzerland — France badly needs Patrick Vieira’s leadership for Italy in Tuesday’s last-chance European Championship match. The problem is that the veteran midfielder may not be fit enough to provide it.

France’s captain has not played a single minute so far at Euro 2008, and has been struggling to recover from a small thigh tear he picked up in a light training session more than two weeks ago.

"I have not had the time to do an exact medical check with him," Domenech said Sunday. "I will see how he is and discuss things more specifically. There is a chance, yes. It is still possible."

Without Vieira, France has looked lost. The 0-0 draw against Romania and 4-1 loss to the Netherlands, means France is facing elimination.
