MILAN, Italy — Combative AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has been cleared to return to training more than two months after seriously injuring an eye.

Gattuso has been battling a nerve problem affecting his left eye and hasn’t played since colliding with teammate Alessandro Nesta in the Serie A on Sept. 9.

Gattuso had a checkup Wednesday and Milan says, "notable progression was seen and the footballer received the definitive OK to participate in training with the squad."

A key member of the Italy squad which won the 2006 World Cup, Gattuso retired from international football following the team’s first-round exit from last year’s tournament in South Africa.
