FRANKFURT, Germany — Hoffenheim released Dutch forward Ryan Babel on the final day of the transfer window on Friday.

Babel’s destination was not immediately known. The Dutchman arrived in Hoffenheim in January 2011 from Liverpool and scored six goals in 51 matches for the Bundesliga club.

Schalke also announced it had taken Netherlands midfielder Ibrahim Afellay on a one-year loan from Barcelona.

Media reports said another Netherlands midfielder, Rafael van der Vaart, had sealed a deal to return to Hamburger SV from Tottenham, but neither club has confirmed the move.
