SAN PELLEGRINO TERME, Italy — After the emotional scenes at Davide Astori’s funeral in Florence, hundreds of mourners attended the Fiorentina captain’s burial in his hometown.

The burial in the cemetery in San Pellegrino Terme, in northern Italy, was delayed for two hours to allow his partner, Francesca Fioretti, to be present. They have a 2-year-old daughter.

Many also visited his coffin on Thursday after the hearse arrived from Florence, with a constant stream of people flowing into the church into the night.

The 31-year-old Astori was found dead in his hotel room on Sunday after a suspected cardiac arrest before Fiorentina was to play an Italian league match at Udinese.

Thousands of mourners gathered in one of Florence’s main squares for his funeral on Thursday, including some of the biggest names in Italian soccer.
