MILAN, Italy — Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho was given a three-match ban and fined $56,000 after making a handcuffs gesture and insulting officials during a 0-0 draw with Sampdoria.

The Italian football association confirmed the penalty Monday, citing Mourinho’s actions including the crossing of his wrists during Saturday’s match.

The Milan side held on for the draw with nine men after two defenders — Walter Samuel and Ivan Cordoba — were sent off in the first half. Inter leads the Serie A standings with 55 points from Roma in second on 50 points and AC Milan third with 48.

Earlier this year, Mourinho was fined $25,000 for questioning the impartiality of a referee in the Jan. 24 Milan derby.
