MILAN — Torino became the third and final team to be relegated from Serie A on Sunday after losing 3-2 at AS Roma in the last round.
Meanwhile, AC Milan secured a direct spot in next season’s Champions League.
Torino needed to win and hope relegation rivals Bologna dropped points to avoid joining Reggina and Lecce in Serie B next season. Bologna beat Catania 3-1 to finish in 17th place with 37 points, while Torino ended with 34.
Bari, Parma and the winner of the promotion playoff will be the newcomers in Serie A next season.
Milan won 2-0 at Fiorentina to finish second and take the final automatic Champions League place. Fiorentina finished fourth and will have to qualify for Europe’s top-tier club competition.
The match represented Milan captain Paolo Maldini’s last match before retiring after 902 games for Milan in 24 seasons.
Inter Milan, who was crowned champion two weeks ago, rounded off its season by winning 4-3 at home to Atalanta, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s double enough to make him the league’s top scorer with 25 goals.
Inter also said farewell to Luis Figo, who is retiring from football. The former Portugal captain has been with Inter since 2005 and helped the club to four successive championship titles.
Inter finished first with 84 points while Milan was second with 74. Juventus took third also with 74 points while Fiorentina was fourth with 68.
Genoa goes into the Europa League with Roma and cup winners Lazio following its 4-1 win against Lecce.
Torino was given some hope early on when Tommaso Vailatti scored from a corner. Defender Phillipe Mexes weakly headed a corner clear, and Vailatti shot low through a pack of players.
Roma tied it before halftime. Striker Jeremy Menez cut in from the right wing and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Matteo Sereni.
In the second half, Torino barely threatened and Mirko Vucinic put Roma ahead in the 74th, cutting in from the left to shoot low.
Francesco Totti put Roma further ahead in the 83rd with a penalty, before Nicola Ventola scored a late consolation in injury time.
Bologna started the match in a determined mood and leading scorer Marco Di Vaio quickly tested goalkeeper Paolo Acerbis.
Midfielder Nicola Mingazzini fired Bologna ahead with a long-range shot and Claudio Terzi added a second before halftime.
After the break, Takayuki Morimoto pulled one back for Catania, but Di Vaio’s 24th goal of the season ensured Bologna’s survival.
In Florence, Milan started the better, in contrast to its recent form that had yielded only one point in its last nine matches.
With the score 0-0 at halftime, there was still a chance for Fiorentina to score the two goals it needed to move past Milan into the automatic Champions League places.
Alberto Gilardino went close for the home team, but Kaka put Milan ahead in the 56th after pouncing on a loose ball in the area.
Five minutes later, Pato put the result beyond doubt when he ran onto a through ball and flicked the ball over Frey.
