Johnson joins U.S. Legion at Fulham

LONDON — Fulham signed United States striker Eddie Johnson on Wednesday after he was granted a work permit to play in England.

The 23-year-old Johnson, who signed a 3 1/2-year contract, becomes the fifth American at the Premier League club after leaving the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer.

No financial terms were given.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson said Johnson would help fill the gap left by injured American striker Brian McBride.

McBride dislocated his left kneecap while scoring in a 2-1 Premier League loss to Middlesbrough on Aug. 18. While he recently returned to training, there’s no date on his comeback.

"I have made no secret of the fact that I believe the squad lacks a certain balance in specific areas of the team and following the loss of Brian McBride to injury, this is true of our strike force," Hodgson said.

"At six foot one inches tall Eddie has the presence that will complement the other forwards within our squad and he has the ability to offer us another dimension to our attacking play."

Johnson has played 31 times for the United States and scored 11 goals.

Fulham is struggling in the relegation zone at 19th place in the 20-team Premier League. The London side also has American goalkeeper Kasey Keller, defender Carlos Bocanegra and forward Clint Dempsey on its roster.
