New hamstring blow for Reds’ Torres

LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has suffered a recurrence of his hamstring injury and faces at least another two weeks on the sidelines.

The 24-year-old Spaniard had only started three matches since returning from a three-week layoff after being injured on World Cup qualifying duty last month.

He played the full 90 minutes of Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Marseille in the Champions League, but didn’t come close to scoring his first Liverpool goal since Oct. 5.

"Fernando has a strain in his right hamstring and will be out of action for between two and three weeks," Liverpool said on Thursday.

Manager Rafa Benitez needs a fit Torres to rediscover his goal-scoring touch if Liverpool is to end its 19-year wait for an English title.

Another blow for Benitez on Thursday was defender Fabio Aurelio being ruled out for two weeks with a calf strain.
