MADRID — Real Madrid says it has re-signed forward Mariano Diaz after he played a season with Lyon in France.

The 25-year-old Diaz, who used to play for Madrid’s youth squads and joined the senior team in 2016-17, returns on a five-year contract.

He played 45 games with Lyon last season, scoring 21 goals.

Diaz had been linked to a move to Sevilla but Madrid had the option of securing his transfer back from Lyon.

Financial details of the deal were not immediately released.

Madrid, a three-time defending European champion, has made few signings since losing Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus in the off-season.
