FRANKFURT — Mainz midfielder Jose Rodriguez has been banned for five Bundesliga matches and fined for a horrific tackle on Dominik Kohr that sent the Augsburg midfielder to the hospital.

The German Football Federation fined the Spaniard 10,000 euros ($11,165) on Tuesday.

Kohr required surgery to close a deep gash in his hamstring. He escaped without any fractures but will be out for weeks.

Rodriguez apologized immediately on Sunday after the match, which Mainz won 3-1.

The club has also fined him an undisclosed sum.
