Man City sets Premier League record for points, goals and wins

Craig Forrest, Paul Peschisolido and James Sharman discuss Huddersfield Town surviving regulation in the Premier League.

MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City set the Premier League record for most points, most goals and most wins in a single season by beating Brighton 3-1 on Wednesday.

City moved onto 97 points, two more than Chelsea’s final total from the 2004-05 season, and 105 goals, two more than Chelsea’s previous record haul from the 2009-10 season.

Pep Guardiola’s team also now has 31 wins, surpassing the previous record of 30 set by Chelsea last season.

City posted a record 18 straight victories on its way to clinching the league title with five games to spare, matching a record held by Manchester United.

The champions lead by 20 points and have one last target — reaching 100 points by beating Southampton on Sunday in its final game of the season.

"We want 100 points and finish this almost-perfect season in the Premier League," Guardiola said.

City also won the League Cup this season, but was eliminated from the Champions League in the quarterfinals.

"I agree that to be considered one of the best, you have to win more," Guardiola said. "To be alongside United in the ’90s or Liverpool in the ’80s, you have to win more.

"In terms of stats and numbers, we were the best. That’s why we are so satisfied."

Arsenal loses at Leicester for 7th straight away defeat

LEICESTER, England — Arsene Wenger will end his tenure at Arsenal without an away point in the Premier League in 2018 after his team lost 3-1 at Leicester on Wednesday.

It was the seventh straight loss on the road for Arsenal since the turn of the year, an embarrassing statistic for Wenger at the culmination of his reign of 22 years. Arsenal last had such a run of defeats in 1966.

Arsenal played with 10 men from the 15th minute at King Power Stadium after centre back Konstantinos Mavropanos was given a straight red card for hauling back Kelechi Iheanacho, who had put Leicester ahead a minute earlier.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalized in the 53rd for Arsenal, but Jamie Vardy regained the lead for Leicester by converting a 76th-minute penalty and Riyad Mahrez made the points safe with a goal in injury time.

Wenger’s final game in charge of Arsenal is against Huddersfield on Sunday.

Huddersfield draws at Chelsea to stay in Premier League

LONDON — Huddersfield secured a second season in the Premier League by drawing 1-1 at Chelsea in their penultimate game of the season on Wednesday.

Laurent Depoitre sent Huddersfield into the lead five minutes into the second half and goalkeeper Jonas Lossl made vital saves to secure the point after Marcos Alonso fortuitously levelled for Chelsea.

With Newcastle and Brighton already safe, all three promoted teams have avoided relegation this season.

As players and fans of Huddersfield, including actor Patrick Stewart, celebrated at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea players watched on gloomily. After being dethroned by Manchester City as champions, Chelsea is scrapping to make the top four and qualify for the Champions League on the final day on Sunday.

Chelsea, which plays at Newcastle, is two points behind fourth-place Liverpool, which hosts Brighton.

Tottenham beats Newcastle, secures Champions League spot

LONDON — Tottenham secured qualification for next season’s Champions League after beating Newcastle 1-0 through Harry Kane’s second-half goal to move into third place in the Premier League on Wednesday.

With Chelsea drawing 1-1 with Huddersfield on the other side of London, Tottenham is guaranteed a top-four finish heading into its last game of the season — at home to Leicester on Sunday.

Spurs will be in the Champions League for the third straight season, playing host to Europe’s elite competition in a new stadium being built on the site of its White Hart Lane ground. They have played this season at Wembley Stadium.

"It is a massive achievement to qualify again," Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said. "I want to congratulate the players … It is a massive effort, 38 games away from home is a huge effort.

"Next season, it will be fantastic for Tottenham to be playing in a new stadium and in the Champions League."

Kane curled in the winner from the edge of the area in the 50th minute for his 28th league goal of the season, leaving the striker three behind Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah in the race to become the Premier League’s top scorer.

Tottenham is two points above fourth-place Liverpool.
