Nuremberg’s hopes of Bundesliga survival dealt another blow

Yuya Kuba scored in the 82' for Nurnberg and Matjia Nastasic scored in the 85' as the teams drew 1-1 in Bundesliga action.

NUREMBERG, Germany — Nuremberg’s hopes of escaping Bundesliga relegation were dealt a blow Friday after being held to a 1-1 home draw by Schalke.

Japanese midfielder Yuya Kubo gave Nuremberg a deserved lead after a period of pressure in the 82nd minute, but Matija Nastasic replied two minutes later for the visitors.

Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel saved a penalty in first half injury time and made more saves in the second half to deny the home side.

Nuremberg stretched its unbeaten run to three games after its second consecutive draw against a relegation rival and moved three points behind Stuttgart, which holds the relegation playoff place ahead of the rest of the 29th round. Stuttgart hosts Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Schalke, which recently reappointed Huub Stevens for his third stint as coach, moved eight points above Stuttgart. The Gelsenkirchen-based club, runner-up last season, has only one win from its past 11 league games.
